Top Ranked Virginia Tech Program Chooses MeasureNet For New Labs

Virigina Tech Chemistry services some 3,000 students per semester. Freshman students entering this Fall (2004) will now have network-powered data collection from MeasureNet in six, newly-built freshman chemistry laboratories on its main campus in Blacksburg.

Each 12-station network features MeasureNet's new diode-array UV-vis spectrometer (200-800 nm range and one-nm resolution). The networked spectrometer enables up to 12 student pairs to utilize the instrument. Each spectrometer will used for emission and absorption experiments in Virginia Tech's freshman program, in addition to other probeware.. The program is ranked in the top 75 U.S. undergraduate programs by the National Research Council.

Tennessee State chooses network-based MeasureNet

MeasureNet announced in June it has been chosen by Tennessee State University's Department of Chemistry to equip the school's General Chemistry laboratories for data acquisition.

Founded in 1912, Tennessee State primarily served the region's African-American community for many decades. The main Nashville campus began in 1947 as an extension of the University of Tennessee and merged into the former Tennessee State University in 1977 in an effort to dismantle the "duel system of education in Tennessee." Today, the university hosts nearly 6,000 graduate and undergraduate students from a variety of racial and economic backgrounds.

The Chemistry Department is housed in the Boswell Science Complex, a new 60,000 square foot building. It's equipped with state of the art teaching and research facilities, classrooms, chemical storage rooms, PC resource rooms, and library. The department hosts nearly 130 chemistry majors. Five general chemistry labs serve the department and the first MeasureNet Network is scheduled for deployment in the 2005 academic year.

"TSU is a critical step in the expansion of MeasureNet in Tennessee that began with the University of Memphis" says MeasureNet President Robert Voorhees. "We are extremely pleased to have Mohammed Karim and his dedicated colleagues on board."

Georgia Perimeter College Joins The MeasureNet Community

Georgia Perimeter College has selected MeasureNet to upgrade its electronic data acquisition capabilities at its Clarkston Campus in Metro Atlanta. The college is the largest two-year institution in the state of Georgia and is noted for its extensive distance learning program.

MeasureNet will be installed in Clarkston's General Chemistry Lab. Nine sections of General Chemistry I and II will be offered in the fall servicing some 216 students. Many are pre-pharmacy and pre-med majors, with some coming from the school's pre-engineering program. Students typically continue on to dental school, physician assistant programs, and veterinary studies. Some students transfer to engineering programs at Georgia Tech, and others leave to pursue pharmacy and medical school opportunities.

Margaret Venable, Ph.D., Chair of the Science and Physical Education Department, said the selection of MeasureNet was a relatively straightforward decision. "We felt that MeasureNet was a good fit because of the probeware choices, the compact size (bench space is a real issue in our labs), and the ease of use. It looks like it will be easy for our part-time instructors to learn how to use and easy for our students..."

Georgia Perimeter College at Clarkston joins other notable former Labworks users now using MeasureNet including neighboring Agnes Scott College in Decatur and North Dakota State University in Fargo.

Innovadora Instrumentación en Química

Única en Puerto Rico Inaugurada en la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico
Viernes, 31 de enero de 2003
Ponce, Puerto Rico
